Anne Scheurich has been a portrait artist for over twenty years. Her pastels of her own chidren created a demand in New Orleans for her softly rendered pastels. This portrait style was inspired by Italian portrait artist Galli. Anne’s mother Zelma Testart Ferchaud was a protege of Galli and is an excellent portrait Painter. Though she never pursued painting as a career, she served as Anne’s inspiration and teacher. Her father, Faurie Ferchaud, CEO of Fairco Inc. in New Orleans, also had a passion for painting. On weekends as a hobby, the self taught artist produced hundreds of paintings. Anne, the subject of many of those paintings, recalls that he offered a penny an hour as a modeling fee. Virtually surrounded by art, it was only natural for Anne to study art in college. She studied art history and recieved a BA from Newcomb Collge. Upon graduating she married photographer/musician Jim Scheurich and they began their pursuit of art. Jim as a fine art publisher snd Anne as an artist. Portraits in oils has become Annes empasis but pastels of children still bring her a great deal of joy and satisfaction. Her commissions have come from individuals and corporations Anne’s vision and sensitivity to the personality of her subjects have kept her in demand throughout her career.
In 1998 Anne was commissioned by the Archdiocese of New Orleans to paint the official portrait of the Archbishop of New Orleans, Francis B. Scholte. The painting can be viewed on the cieling of St. Louis Cathedral, where it will remain as part of its permanent collection. In 2000 Anne created the official Mardi Gras Proclamation for REX, King of the Carnival. The Proclamation which depicts the Captain leading the Rex parade through the canopy of oak trees on St. Charles Avenue is one of the most popular ever created and can be viewed at the Louisiana State Museum.0
